After being diagnosed with an apparently incurable heart disease in 1890, young Stanley sought a solution in the practice of osteopathy and nutrition. At the age of 16 he took self medication, began studying natural medicine and eventually founded Champneys in Tring after taking over the property from the Rothschild family. As a pioneer of the concept of holistic health and naturopathy, Lief's reputation has grown. With patients visiting him remotely, his success was rapid and ultimately lasting. In fact, his approach to wholeness and healthy eating, and his recognition that stress has a negative impact on health, can still be seen in modern medicine and practice.
